5 Months
At 5 months, Jakiah is happy, healthy and such a joy in our lives! Seriously, this kid is SO smiley! He smiles at anyone and everyone and his grin is so gashdang CUTE! When he has a big grin, it's with his WHOLE body; his whole face lights up and he wiggles all the way down to his toes! *melt* You can even tell from the back of his head that he is smiling!
However, since he's now so active, he wants to be on the move any time he wakes up, which means Mommy has had some long nights lately....it just takes him a little longer to settle back down, because he wants to be up and moving!
He is so enraptured with his big sister. I'm just amazed how they already 'play' together. He loves to watch her do everything and she is great at bringing him toys, comforting and entertaining him. We have had to have several talks about what is safe (i.e. only bringing BABY toys to him, not grabbing his face and pulling for kisses, only 'holding' him when Mommy or Daddy is helping us, etc), but he is a tough kid and it rarely phases him when big sister 'helps' and just loves him SO much!
He is getting the chubbiest thighs, I love chubby babies!! He babbles and coos all the time and he is becoming so interested in everything. He loves to look at books and explore and experiment with different toys and objects. We're going to get out the Jumperoo soon, he loves standing up and jumping while holding out hands. And, randomly, this kid LOVES to be held upsidedown! Maybe it's all that yoga his mommy did while he was in the belly. Or the fact that he spent so much time facing that way, who knows??
Jakiah Gabriel, you are wonderful!!

Hanging Out
So, in my attempt to keep our family green AND to keep a little more 'green' in our bank account (WOW, that was cheesy), my aunt surprised me with a gift I have been wanting for a LONG time:
I really love it! Now, with Oregon weather, it's a little fickle to hang out clothes to dry, for obvious reasons.
But, the rain gives me an excuse not to do laundry, right??
I'm still learning the ins and outs, but it's going really well. My husband is slightly less than thrilled; he thinks it makes the clothes too stiff. I've looked online to find some tips on keeping the clothes softer and am trying to balance it out.
Kalaya LOVES it. She loves to 'help' Mommy with the clothes pins, which means dumping the clothes pins out (pictured below) and clipping all of them to the bottom of various items on the line.
In a way, it makes me feel very connected to the women of my past. My grandmother had a clothes line installed in her yard, at her house of over 50 years. (and that thing is there FOREVER, it is very solidly stuck in cement in the ground!!) I remember seeing our laundry on the line when we would visit. I especially think of her and others when I hang little baby clothes and diapers on the line; about how they too were young and just starting out at one point and how hanging out clean clothes was just one thing they did to help with their newly started family.
A clothes line!!!

Flashback Friday
I love the idea that my friend Jeni (check out her great blog by the way!) has on her blog for Fridays. So, here's mine for today:
Wow. THREE years ago!! Miss Kalaya was a wonderful, cute, sweet baby, but was only happy if she was nursing or moving and being held by Mommy at this point. Let's just say that this pic makes me sad and remembering being very, very tired. But, I blinked and she was a three year old!

Bills Bills Bills
So, for the last several months (okay, year...since we moved
into this house....), I have been trying to figure out a way to get our family
on a budget and STICK TO IT. (it’s on my 30 before 30 list) We got a fantastic
deal on our house, but it has taken some money to get it where we want it. And,
it’s going to take more money to get it where we eventually want it. Luckily,
we had some money saved up for the major things that needed to be done. But,
that’s another story.
The truth is, we just haven’t been very smart with our
money. Nothing drastic. We don’t have a lot of debt from big purchases. We have
a mortgage. And Nelson’s school loans from his undergrad program. (we are VERY
blessed that we don’t have any other school debt!) We also don’t have a car
payment, though we are only living with one car at this point. And, our credit
card debt has slowly but surely been building up. Not huge, obvious purchases
such as furniture, vacations, electronics, etc. No, it’s that we get to the end
of the month and there’s nothing left in checking and we go out to eat anyway
or make a quick stop at Target and then….on a credit card. And, those little
purchases have added up.
Our main issue is that we don’t budget. At all. We just
assume that during each paycheck period, we will have enough money to cover
whatever spending we want to do. Gosh, that sounds dumb, down right embarrassing
to say out loud. But, when we were first married, with 2 strong incomes, low
Monmouth rent and no children, that’s how life was. (sigh….not that we’d change
it at all of course!!) Most of our spending has toned down, but we definitely
still think we can go out to eat or get take out whenever we want. That’s our
biggest weakness.
So, long story short, I had a meltdown last month, because
the end of the month came and I had to put groceries on credit, because we hadn’t
been smart and then, suddenly, we had $20 left in our checking account and barely
anything in savings. I knew we had a problem.
Now, the credit card debt is there, but it’s not terrible. I’m
not going to share the exact amount, but it’s doable. The most frustrating
thing is that if we didn’t have credit card payments to make every month, we’d
have more money and be much more comfortable. We’ve been paying the minimum,
with interest adding on and making more purchases; the American downward slope.
So, that’s one thing that’s changing. We’ve taken credit cards out of our
wallet, except for one shared card for REAL emergencies. (i.e. the car breaks
down, a medical emergency, etc) NOT for things we can wait another month for. We’re
using Dave Ramsey’s snowball method (or something like that) to hopefully pay
off the cards quickly and SOON. (Google it, if you’re interested)
The next step was figuring out each month’s income and where
it had to go and what we had left over. I looked through past bills and figured
out the average we pay on each item (some are always the same, such as the
mortgage, others change all the time, such as the gas or electric bill) I
factored in what we needed and are able to pay on our credit cards too.
I opened a new checking account. We now have 2 checking
accounts and 1 savings account. Our 2 paychecks go into one checking account.
Immediately each month, I’m now going to transfer a pre-determined amount into
the second checking account. This is to pay all of the bills. The catch is we
do NOT have debit cards for this account. We only are allowed to write checks
and the checkbook stays at home. The money ONLY goes to bills. I am putting an
average of each bill in the 2nd account, so that I don’t get used to
spending less in the summer and then not be ready for winter with the heating
or if a bill goes higher, etc.
The remaining money in the first checking account is for
groceries, gas, going out to eat, shopping and any other way we are planning to
spend money during the month. I changed some things about grocery shopping,
mainly that I’m now going once a week instead of every 2, mainly because I want
to stop throwing out produce or other things because they don’t get used, etc.
I am really, really trying to plan meals that are simple, but yummy, to avoid
the temptation to just ‘go out’. I’m also taking a friend’s advice and doubling
recipes, then freezing half for nights that I don’t feel like cooking. AND,
they use less energy, since I’m not cooking 2 separate meals, I’d never thought
of that!
This is where I’m turning to Dave Ramsey again. We are ONLY
spending cash. I have a container of envelopes to divide out cash for
groceries, gas and going out to eat. I plan to add some more envelopes and I’m
still tweaking the amounts in them, since I just started this. If there’s no
cash left, no going out (or whatever else). This may get sticky some months,
but it’s working so far. Any remaining cash is yet to be determined. Probably I
am going to put it into savings or make an extra credit card payment. I’m
trying to get rid of the debt and then get a reserve of at least $1000 in cash.
(Dave again)
And, just for fun, I made a bank out of an old yogurt
container and stuck this picture on the front of it:
A goal for our next/first big family of 4 vacation, which
will happen when we have EARNED and SAVED the money, not put on credit!!! Right
now, any extra change is going in the (yogurt) bank.
So, that’s how this stay at home mom is ‘earning’ money. Or
at least, not spending too much of what we do have.

Manly (Guest blogger Daddy)
“What does it mean to be a man?”
Interesting. Thanks for the question, son-who-can’t-talk-yet.
I thought I’d have AT LEAST ten years before you asked me, but clearly you’re
more advanced than I had anticipated. It must be because you aren’t
circumcised.
Kelly’s aunt bought me this (very funny) book by Joel Stein
called ‘Man Made,’ which is basically the story of him trying to figure out
what it means to BE A MAN after he finds out he’s going to have a son. It has
gotten me thinking about what I’m going to say to Jakiah if he ever asks me
what it means to be a man, besides, “Hey, what’s that behind you?” and then
running away when he turns to look. What a gullible idiot my son will be.
Part of me hopes that he’ll never ask me this question,
since I have no idea how to answer him. Maybe the best I’ll be able to say is, “A
man is…uh…a man is a guy…who…does…stuff.” Then I’ll have to explain to him how
he’s managed to live so long without me accidentally putting him in the
microwave or dishwasher.
Another part of me hopes that he ONLY ASKS ME this question,
because I can only imagine what answers he would get from other people. Most of
them would probably make his follow-up question be, “Is mommy a lesbian because
she married a girl?”
I’m sure what will actually happen is he will ask me once,
when he’s young, and then his idea of manhood will be shaped and reshaped by
American media and culture and society. And it’s this realization that freaks
me out, and leads me to this post.
So, Jakiah, even though I know over the course of your life
you’ll hear only 75% of what I say and actually listen to just 40% of it, let
me try to explain to you what being a man is, at least in the opinion of your
old man.
Being a man means you will have hair on some part of your
body other than the head. Usually, it’s your arms, or chest, or back, or legs,
or armpits. Mustaches are manly (example: Tom Selleck), except when they aren’t
considered manly (example: Salvador Dali). Long or longish hair isn’t usually
recognized as manly (example: Justin Bieber, hippies), except when it is
(example: Jesus, carpenters in general). Having a beard is exceptionally manly
(example: any lumberjack), unless you’re Harvey Fierstein (example: Harvey
Fierstein).
Athletics are manly! Most manly men play sports (examples:
football, hockey, Ninja Warrior), although it can’t just be any sport
(examples: golf, Frisbee golf, Golf Warrior). The manliest of all sports is
wrestling, where the goal is to wear 60% of what’s considered regular attire
and give crippling hugs to your opponent until you’re both so exhausted that you
lay on top of each other. It is manly to watch this with a group (example:
wrestling tournament), but not by yourself (example: curious on the internet).
Some sports that don’t seem manly can be manly-fied pretty
easily (examples: diving – while shooting a crossbow at a moving target, polo –
using the skull of a vanquished rival), while some manly sports can instantly
be unmanly-ed (examples: fencing – with swimming pool noodles, polo - without changing anything). Regardless of whether you are re-manly-ing or
de-manly-ing a sport, keep the following in mind to stay manly at the
conclusion of the competition: you may cry after you win, but not after you
lose. Also, it is never okay to cry at sporting events if you are a spectator,
even if you are watching your child (exception: you and your father, who was
unquestionably manly, first bonded over the sport that you are currently crying
over).
Being a man means you work! It’s especially helpful if you
work with your hands (examples: welder, electrician, mechanic). However, there
are some things that wouldn’t be considered manly, even if you used your hands
a ton (examples: video game designer, hairstylist, hand model). Working a lot
means you will have manly injuries (examples: sore back, rough hands), although
you are never allowed to complain about them to anyone but your other manly
work friends. (Note: having too many manly work friends is not manly.) Similar
injuries might seem manly, but if they don’t happen at work, they aren’t manly
(examples: sore back from vacuuming, rough hands from high-fiving your wife
regarding the results of a figure skating competition).
Cars are very manly, especially the ones that are a) loud,
b) big, or c) loud and big. Some cars are not manly though, usually ones that
a) get good gas mileage, b) fit neatly into a one-car garage, or c) get good
gas mileage and fit neatly into a one-car garage. If a man’s car is not manly
enough, he can always buy a boat or a motorcycle. If a man has all three, he
can even be a hand model and still be a man.
Working on cars is even manlier (examples: changing a tire,
realigning tires), except when it involves not getting dirty and sweaty
(examples: changing the air freshener from ‘lemon’ to ‘summer breeze,’
realigning the ‘My Other Car is a Firebolt’ bumper sticker). The more grease
you have in your garage the more manly it is (example: axle grease), unless it
isn’t (example: poster of dancing Kenickie).
Killing things is manly (examples: hunting for elk, fishing
for trout, squishing a spider), but they have to being really specific things
(non-examples: hunting for the remote, fishing for compliments, squishing a
dust bunny resembling a spider). Stealing things can be manly too (examples:
kisses, hearts), unless they are not to be stolen by men (example: glimpses of
how your own butt looks in your new jeans). Actually, breaking most of the Ten
Commandments can be considered manly, especially if you do them all at the same
time (example: “Goddammit! I stole this holy golden calf statue from my
neighbor because I was jealous that he made one, especially since I lost the
one that I built – that took me fifteen consecutive Sundays to build by the way
– for his hot wife with whom I’d been having an affair because my dick dad and
bitch mom never taught me benefits of monogamy. I mean, he has a huge house and
probably cheats on his taxes anyway, and come to think of it I hate him so much
that I’m going to kill him.”)
Drinking alcohol is very manly, especially if you prove how
manly you are by drinking the cheapest beer available because hey, it’s still
alcohol (examples: Pabst Blue Ribbon, Hamm’s, Coors). Some alcohol is not manly
(examples: microbrews that aren’t dark, anything ending in ‘Light’), but other
alcohol is so manly you might as well own a boat and a motorcycle (examples:
whiskey, evidently Dos Equis). Abraham Lincoln and Alice Cooper (each of whom
you can’t think of without immediately thinking of the other) never drank
alcohol, but they were manly for other reasons (Lincoln: killed zombies,
Cooper: looks like a zombie).
The last thing that makes you manly is bedding chicks (Note:
it is also manly to refer to women as ‘chicks’ in front of your manly friends).
If there’s one thing that builds up your manly meter faster than almost
anything else in the entire world, it’s being promiscuous. It doesn’t even
matter what they look like – we’re talking quantity over quality here. You have
to be careful though, because if you start getting too many quality chicks,
your manly friends will get jealous and it will actually reverse your
manliness. They will assume you aren’t manly because you care too much about
the faces of your conquests. Or that you care so much about appearing manly
that secretly you must not be manly at all.
On kind of a bizarrely related note, you should never
develop any kind of feelings for any of your chicks (which is why it’s easier
on your manliness when you discount quality in your search for bedpost
notches), because that can lead to the two things most detrimental to your
manliness: a) becoming engaged, and b) getting married. If one (or both) of
these things happens to you, the only way to reclaim your manliness is to have
a son, and pass on the secrets of being a man to him. Which, obviously, is what
we’ve been doing here. So you’re welcome, and thank you.
Also, if you really ever ask me what it means to be a man, I
will answer you with this:
It means you have a penis.
(And even then, I’m not so sure.)

Crunchy??
Okay, to the rest of the country, maybe we seem hippy, crunchy, whatever you want to call it, but around here, a lot of this is pretty dang normal......
Seriously.
This made me laugh and laugh, because it's really so common and I almost don't get why it's so funny!!
We must be REALLY crunchy, we definitely don't call it booby at our house. Kalaya calls it Mommy's nurse or we say breast. Booby makes it sexualized.
Yes, I'm totally serious.
ENJOY!!

Pita Pizzas
One of my favorite go-to quick meals is homemade pizza. Good job to those of you who make dough from scratch or buy dough, but I have a secret:
This recipe is EVEN EASIER!!
And still healthy!
All I do is buy whole wheat pitas and slap on whatever toppings we have around the house. Then, under the broiler for 4 min or so (watch it closely!!) and DONE!
On this particular day, I had tomato sauce, fresh pineapple, spinach, black olives, mozzarella, and turkey pepperoni on hand, but obviously, the possibilities are ENDLESS!!
I have to cut Kalaya's to look more like Papa John's to get her to eat it.
Seriously.
Sigh....
The result!
Kid approved!!
I get pizza some day soon, right mommy???

Pinspired
So, it seems really crazy to me, but my life had a drastic
change in it a couple of months back.
And, not, I’m not talking about this:
I’m talking about Pinterest.
It seems SO silly that something so simple has changed my
life, but it really has!
I need to regularly update things I’m doing, trying,
tasting, learning, etc from Pinterest. There are so many ideas out there for my
house, my tummy, my kids, my LIFE that I’m finding on there!
Now, a side note. I maaaaay look on there when I should be
doing other things. Like cleaning.
But, not sleeping. That is too precious.
Anyway, I have tried so many new recipes and have enjoyed a
lot of them! There are some that are so yummy!! Here are some of my favorites:
Creamy Chicken Taquitos, (OMG, seriously, make these NOW!), chicken and wild
rice casserole, pineapple fried rice, make ahead muffin melts, chipotle rice,
jalapeno popper dip, and creamy white chicken and artichoke lasagna (Oh. My.
WORD!) to name a few. I'm trying to try at least one new recipe each week!
I also have started doing things inspired or found on
Pinterest to help save money; I’ve made and frozen beans and chicken stock,
made my own liquid laundry soap, dishwasher soap and a bunch of other household
cleaners, weed killer, and other little things. I love that I’m saving money!
It has also helped give me ideas for activities for Kalayaand eventually Jakiah! We have made our own sensory tables, come up with
crafts, painted with different things, tried new games and many other things! It’s
given lots of alternatives to TV when I need Kalaya busy! I'm trying really hard to do at least one new activity per week and do repeated ones throughout each week.
I’ve also pinned a lot of ideas for organization and getting
back in shape, but I’m still getting to those.
Give me time. : )
